Sponsor Letter for Social Security Application

No sponsor letter is required to apply for a Social Security card. Find verification that you can share with the Social Security Administration

Some Social Security Administration employees are unfamiliar with the requirements for J-1 Interns and Trainees applying for a Social Security number. They may ask you for a sponsor letter as part of your application. The letter is required for some types of J-1 visa holders, but J-1 Interns and Trainees do not require a sponsor letter to obtain a Social Security number.

Please refer to the Social Security Program Operations Manual Systems for verification that you do not need a sponsor letter to apply for a Social Security number.
