Travel during the Extension Period

Find instructions for reentering the US after a program extension.

The J-1 visa in your passport will likely expire on your original end date. If you extend your program, you may legally remain in the US with an expired J-1 visa. You will receive a new Form DS-2019 to verify your J-1 visa status during the additional months of training. Attach your original Form DS-2019 to the new one.

If you travel outside of the US after your J-1 visa expires, you must apply for a new J-1 visa at a US Embassy or Consulate outside of the United States. You cannot re-enter the US with an expired J-1 visa.

Plan enough time during your trip to apply for, and obtain, the new visa from the US Embassy. Intrax has no authority over the US Embassy and cannot guarantee processing times or the issuance of a new J-1 visa.
